4. A major new survey from Microsoft shows that bosses and workers fundamentally disagree about productivity when working from home.

While 87% of workers felt they worked as, or more efficiently, from home, 80% of managers disagreed.

3. British consumer confidence slid this month to its lowest level since records began in the mid-1970s.

The consumer confidence index from market research firm GfK fell to -49 in September from -44 in August, worse than all forecasts in a Reuters poll that pointed to an improved reading of -42.

2. The Bank of England has raised interest rates from 1.75% to 2.25% - the highest level for 14 years - and warned the UK may already be in a recession.

The central bank had previously expected the economy to grow between July and September but it now believes it will shrink by 0.1%.
