5. Three leading British retailers, Next, Greggs and discount group B&M have underscored the threat they face from inflation this year, with their bosses battling to remain competitive as consumer finances come under pressure and prices surge.
The Bank of England expects consumer price inflation to hit 6% in April, its highest since 1992, before easing.
4. Fines will be waived for anyone who submits their self-assessment tax return up to a month after the normal deadline of 31 January.
HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) said fines, typically £100, would not be enforced for anyone who files by 28 February.
3. Bookmaker Ladbrokes claimed £102m from the furlough scheme, despite rapid growth in online betting making up for all losses from the closure of stores.
Accounts published on Thursday show that Ladbrokes claimed £57.5m in 2020, and the BBC understands it claimed a further £44m this year.
2. Asda has backed out of a commitment it made in October to stock exclusively British beef, angering farmers.
National Beef Association (NBA) chairman Neil Shand said he was "deeply disappointed" by Asda's decision.
1. The Armed Forces have sent 200 personnel into NHS hospitals across London to plug staff shortages.
The Ministry of Defence will provide 40 defence medics and 160 general duty personnel for the next three weeks.
