4. Just 20% of Britain's trains are set to run tomorrow due to strike action and people are being warned to only travel if absolutely necessary.
RMT union members in 15 train firms and Network Rail will strike in the eighth day of action over pay and conditions.
3. British retailers last month saw their slowest sales growth since shops reopened after COVID-19 lockdowns as consumers reined in spending amid a worsening cost-of-living crunch.
Total like-for-like sales in September increased by 2.8% year-on-year, which followed a rise of 3.6% in August, which was the previous lowest post-COVID performance.
2. The UK has opened a new licensing round for companies to explore for oil and gas in the North Sea.
Nearly 900 locations are being offered for exploration, with as many as 100 licences set to be awarded which is at odds with international climate scientists who say fossil fuel projects should be closed down, not expanded.
1. British households could lose power for up to three hours at a time this winter if gas supplies run extremely low, National Grid has warned.
The company said it was an "unlikely" scenario but added that supply interruptions were a possibility if the energy crisis escalated.
