4. The UK imported no fuel from Russia in June for the first time on record.

Imports of goods from Russia also fell to £33m in June, the lowest level since records began in January 1997, the ONS said.

3. The German government has approved a set of energy-saving measures for the winter which will limit the use of lighting and heating in public buildings.

The government aims to reduce gas usage by 2% through the new rules.

2. British car production rose for a third straight month in July, 8.6% higher than a weak comparative last year, when car makers were struggling with acute shortages of chips and COVID-related absences.

The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) said 58,043 units were made in Britain last month, up from 53,438 in July 2021, but the output remains 46.4% below pre-pandemic levels.

1. British Gas is to donate 10% of its profits to help customers cope with soaring bills for the "duration of the energy crisis".

Its owner Centrica says the money will go into an existing support fund - trebling help available this winter for the poorest customers.
