5 Things You Need To Know, Today, on Wedesday 1st February 2023
5. The levels of caffeine could vary hugely depending where you stop. Consumer group Which? measured the caffeine in cappuccino, espresso and filter coffee at Caffè Nero, Costa, Greggs, Pret a Manger and Starbucks.
It found Pret's single espresso had six times as much caffeine as Starbucks's.
4. The government is announcing measures to "robustly" regulate the cryptocurrency industry.
It says the proposals, being published today, will give consumers confidence while allowing the sector to "thrive".
3. The way electricity prices are set has pushed UK household bills up by £7.2bn over two years. Under existing rules, energy suppliers pay the highest price for wholesale electricity, usually via gas fired power stations, no matter how it is made.
The CTI analysis finds that if suppliers had instead paid closer to the average cost of generation across all forms including renewables, the cost to energy retailers would have been much lower.
2. Tesco has bought the brand and intellectual property of High Street stationery chain Paperchase, hours after it fell into administration.
But the grocer has not acquired the chain's 106 shops in the UK and Ireland, leaving the future of 820 staff in doubt.
1. Up to half a million British teachers, civil servants, train drivers and university lecturers will strike today in the largest coordinated action, in a generation, which the government says will cause widespread disruption.
The mass walkouts will see schools close, the military on standby to help at Britain's borders, and no rail services running across much of the country.
