5 Things You Need To Know, Today, on Wednesday 19th April 2023
5. Netflix is shutting down the DVD rental service that launched the firm 25 years ago, one of a series of changes as the streaming giant enters a new era.
The company, which upended the television and movie industry as it moved from DVDs to online streaming, is now struggling to reignite growth.
4. The former boss of business group giant the CBI says his "reputation has been totally destroyed" after being fired over complaints about his behaviour.
Tony Danker acknowledged he had made some staff feel "very uncomfortable", adding: "I apologise for that."
3. Fox News has settled a defamation lawsuit from the voting machine company, Dominion, over its reporting of the 2020 presidential election.
In a last-minute settlement before trial, the network agreed to pay $787.5m (£634m) - about half of the $1.6bn initially sought by Dominion.
2. British wages rose faster than anticipated last month, in a move that economists judge may tip the Bank of England towards a further rise in interest rates next month, despite an unexpected increase in joblessness too.
The Office for National Statistics (ONS) said the unemployment rate edged up to 3.8% - its highest since the second quarter of 2022 - rather than holding at 3.7%, as forecast by economists in a Reuters poll.
1. Britain’s annual inflation rate is poised to fall below 10% for the first time since last August when the latest official figures for the cost of living are released at 7am.
A sharp fall in energy prices is thought likely to have dragged down the government’s preferred measure of inflation from 10.4% in February to 9.8% in March, according to a poll of economists conducted by Reuters.
