DXS International (DXSP), a software company providing clinical decision support solutions, has announced the successful acquisition of a £20,000 Invention for Innovation FAST grant from the National Institute for Health and Care Research, in relation to its ExpertCare medicines optimisation tool.

This funding will facilitate the examination of four hundred and eighty diagnosed hypertensive patients across multiple participating GP practices. The primary objective of this project study is to determine whether the implementation of ExpertCare in hypertension medication reviews leads to an increase in the proportion of hypertensive patients who adhere to the medication treatment guidelines outlined by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE).

By assessing the impact of ExpertCare at the DXS pilot sites in 2021 and 2022, the research plan and anticipated outcomes of this project aim to significantly advance the management of hypertensive patients.

Commencing on May 1st, the project is expected to be completed by August 31st, 2023. To ensure the credibility of the trial data and the publication of results, DXS International is collaborating with the Eastern Academic Health Science Network.

David Immelman, CEO said. “This is an exciting opportunity as soon we will have a formal evaluation by Eastern AHSN, of our ExpertCare hypertension solution’s ability to assist GP practices improve NICE (National Institute for Health and Care Excellence) compliance for hypertensive patients. Evidence shows that improved NICE compliance will result in improved blood pressure control which currently in England is only 60%. Improved blood pressure control will result in reduced heart attacks and strokes saving lives and the NHS money.”

The news today demonstrates another way that DXS is building the foundations to rapidly scale its annual revenue to £4.7m by April 2024, from the £3.3m it delivered in FY23. The company said it plans to generate new revenue of approximately £700,000 from the ExpertCare Hypertension solution, with awareness of this key study contributing to this goal.

ExpertCare, is a hypertension-prescribing tool that frees up NHS clinicians time by allowing nurses and pharmacists to conduct the majority of hypertension consultations with minimal GP input. This is vital as across the UK, practices are struggling to cope with workloads, and, according to research, long-term conditions account for 50 percent of all GP appointments.

Hypertension, also known as high blood pressure, is the leading preventable cause of premature death worldwide. On top of this, around two-thirds of individuals with multiple health conditions suffer from hypertension, making their treatment a complex process. Different conditions and treatments may interact in complicated ways and cause negative impacts, but ExpertCare reduces the risk of avoidable medicines-related consequences.

ExpertCare can reduce GP time spent on hypertension consultations by 328 hours per year, which equates to an annual saving of £24,000. Moreover, by contributing to a significant reduction in heart attacks and strokes, ExpertCare has the potential to save the NHS an average of £14,000 per practice per year.
