Poolbeg Pharma (POLB) has dosed the first patient in its POLB 001 TOPICAL clinical trial, marking the start of clinical execution for its programme targeting Cytokine Release Syndrome (CRS) associated with cancer immunotherapies. Interim data remains on track for late summer 2026, while partnering discussions with multiple companies continue to progress.
The TOPICAL study is evaluating POLB 001 as a preventative treatment for CRS in patients with relapsed or refractory multiple myeloma receiving the approved bispecific antibody teclistamab. The drug is being supplied by Johnson & Johnson at no cost to Poolbeg.
Recruitment is also gathering pace, with University College London Hospital now activated as the second clinical trial site. Additional sites are expected to open shortly, supporting broader patient enrolment. The company said the study has attracted strong interest from the haematology community, with investigators making unsolicited enquiries about participating in the trial.
Poolbeg noted that a successful recent US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) pre-Investigational New Drug (pre-IND) meeting has clarified the regulatory pathway for POLB 001 in the United States. Independent US payer research has also highlighted what the company believes is a significant commercial opportunity, supporting premium pricing assumptions and reinforcing the programme's multi-billion-dollar peak sales potential.
“The dosing of the first patient is an important milestone as we evaluate POLB 001 as a potential therapy to prevent CRS associated with cancer immunotherapies,” said Poolbeg Pharma Chief Executive Officer Dr Jeremy Skillington.
“As recruitment progresses and additional clinical sites become active, we anticipate a steady stream of operational updates ahead of interim data later this summer. We also continue to make encouraging advances in discussions with potential partners and believe the combination of clinical execution, regulatory progress and upcoming data creates a compelling period of value creation for Poolbeg.”
