5. Chinese e-commerce giant Alibaba's Singles Day is known for being the world's biggest online shopping extravaganza.

Sales for the 11-day event rose at their slowest rate since it was launched in 2009, up 8.5% on last year, but customer spending still hit a fresh record high of 540.3bn yuan ($84.5bn; £63.2bn).

4. The Tulip skyscraper will not be built after a government panel found it to be "poor and unsympathetic to the historical context" of the capital.

The 1,000ft (305m) tower was initially approved by the City of London Corporation, but the plans were rejected by London's mayor.
