Intelligent Ultrasound Group (MED)  has seen shares jump over 9% today after announcing a new collaboration with the National Imaging Academy Wales (NIAW). The partners aim to develop tools to harness the power of artificial intelligence to help improve ultrasound scanning and education.

Such a goal, the partners believe, would drive new education, innovation, and research into the techniques used in ultrasounds, which are critical for patient care and outcomes.

Intelligent Ultrasound has been both developing this technology as well as working towards its uptake in the medical field.

The company recently announced it had signed a long-term licencing and co-development agreement with “one of the world's leading ultrasound equipment manufacturers” to integrate its AI real-time image analysis software onto a range of specialty ultrasound systems.

And it could be an innovation the industry needs. In the latest ‘Guidelines for Professional Ultrasound,’ published by the British Medical Ultrasound Society and the Society & College of Radiographers, there is no mention of artificial intelligence, let alone a methodology for its practical implementation.

As reported by The Economist, doctors in Tennessee, U.S.A have used a similar AI-supplemented technology to analyze brain scans more rapidly-- an innovation that has cut back on critical delays when it comes to identifying dangerous clots.

Dr. Phillip Wardle, NIAW Director & Consultant Radiologist is ready to welcome the technology’s evolution; “Working closer together, we both aim to develop simulation training and advanced deep-learning AI in Ultrasound that will address the needs of current and future imaging workforce including Sonographers and Radiologists. By combining NIAW's clinical expertise with Intelligent Ultrasound's leading-edge in AI techniques and Simulation, we intend to help trainees in Ultrasound to become proficient more quickly."

CEO of Intelligent Ultrasound Stuart Gall echoed the sentiment, commenting: “The opportunity to combine Intelligent Ultrasound's AI development and commercialisation skills with the Academy's clinical excellence is very exciting for us and will allow us to continue our development as one of the world's leading ultrasound AI companies.

We believe this has the potential to benefit patients both in Wales and worldwide."
