Developer of low cost, solid oxide fuel cell technology, Ceres Power Holdings (CWR) , announced on Wednesday the successful development of its first zero-emission hydrogen ready fuel cell system.
The system is to be unveiled later today at the Fuel Cell Seminar & Energy Exposition by Director of Fuel Cell and Stack Development at Ceres, Dr. Subhasish Mukerjee.
The combined heat power system, designed exclusively for use with hydrogen fuel, is considered essential technology to support the transition to zero carbon heat and power.
Ceres are addressing a growing customer interest in hydrogen technologies and distributed power as part of innovative methods tackling climate change and air pollution -- and this first CHP prototype hydrogen system demonstrates a commitment from the group to maintain its role in supporting the customer journey to a clean energy future.
Significantly, in comparison to its existing fuel-flexible system, the CHP delivers an equivalent performance with fewer components, a reduced size and up to 40% cost reduction.
"There is no greater challenge than achieving zero carbon emissions, and to meet it we have to find innovative solutions to decarbonise heat, power and transportation systems,” said Mr Mukerjee.
He added, “Ceres’ new hydrogen CHP technology runs on both green hydrogen and more widely available low purity hydrogen from industrial sources2, offering an immediate solution to tackling climate change and air pollution.”
So far, the CHP has achieved greater than 50% electrical efficiency, with an overall efficiency of 90% achievable in combined heat and power mode.
Globally, interest in the potential of hydrogen is growing, the company explained, with countries such as Japan and South Korea setting explicit targets for its power capacity.
Ceres maintains strong partnerships across both of these areas and more, having developed and licensed its systems to world-leading manufacturers like Bosch and Weichai Power.
